These are our prices for Oriental rug cleaning washed at our facility. If a company quotes you $1 a square foot to clean a Persian rug in your living room with a carpet wand, they are cleaning the surface and leaving the sand, the dyes and the odor exactly where they are.

A carpet is glued to a floor. A hand-knotted rug is a textile with a foundation, a pile and dyes that were set by hand, sometimes a century ago. Cleaning it properly means:

Wool is the base rate. Silk and silk blends need cool water and hand work, so $6 to $12 a square foot. Viscose (“art silk”) is the most fragile fiber we see and is priced like silk. A machine-made synthetic rug that looks Oriental is $2 to $4, and we will tell you which you have; a lot of people are relieved.
Antiques and rugs with dry rot, loose ends or previous moth damage are washed more gently and slowly. We document condition at pickup and point out anything we find, and can arrange re-fringing, re-weaving and re-binding through our repair partners; repair is quoted separately.
Rugs from waterfront homes in Bay Shore, Port Washington or Hampton Bays carry sand and humidity odor and usually need the full wash rather than a light clean. Rugs from busy family houses in Levittown or Deer Park more often need the urine treatment. Fine rugs from Manhasset, Locust Valley and Huntington are more often silk or antique.

Almost always. A hand-knotted rug washed properly every three to five years lasts for generations, and cleaning costs a small fraction of replacing it. The exception is a rug with severe dry rot, which we will tell you about at pickup.
We can do a light surface clean in the home for a machine-made rug, but a hand-knotted rug should be washed submerged at a facility. In-home cleaning cannot remove sand from the foundation or urine from the backing, and hot water on a wool rug in place risks shrinkage and bleeding.
