What we repair

Most rug damage falls into a handful of types, and each one has a proper fix. Here is what comes through our plant every week, and where to read more about each.

1

Fringe repair and replacement

Fringe is the first thing to wear on any rug: it gets vacuumed, walked on and caught in doors. We secure loose warp ends, re-tie knots, or replace the fringe with new hand-sewn or machine-sewn fringe that matches the rug. Rug fringe repair.

2

Moth damage

Moths eat wool from the back of a rug, under furniture, where nobody looks. We treat the rug, remove the larvae and casings in the wash, and rebuild the eaten areas by reknotting or patching. Moth damage rug repair.

3

Reweaving and holes

Holes from pets, burns, furniture legs or old moth damage are rewoven on the original foundation, matching the wool and the pattern. Rug reweaving.

4

Edges and binding

Worn selvedges and unraveling sides are overcast or re-bound so the rug stops losing rows. Machine-made rugs are serged or bound with matching tape.

5

Blocking and stretching

A rug that curls at the corners, ripples, or dried crooked after a flood is stretched and blocked square at the plant. Rug blocking and stretching.

6

Padding

The cheapest repair is prevention. A proper pad cut to the rug stops slipping, wear and the ripples that lead to every other repair on this page. Rug padding.

How a rug repair job works

Repairs start the same way a rug pickup does. The technician looks at the rug with you, points out the damage and any wear you may not have noticed on the back, and writes a price for the repair and, almost always, for a wash at the same time. Rugs are washed before they are repaired: the wool has to be clean to match new wool to it, and a moth repair on a rug that still has larvae in it is wasted work.

At the plant the rug is dusted, washed, dried flat and then goes to the repair bench. Fringe, binding and padding are quick jobs, a few days on top of the wash. Reweaving and moth rebuilding are slower because they are done by hand, knot by knot, and we tell you the turnaround at pickup rather than guessing. When the rug is finished it is inspected, photographed, rolled and delivered back to your floor, free.

We only promise what the rug can take. Some rugs are too far gone to reweave at a sensible cost, and some machine-made rugs cost less to replace than to rebuild. The technician will say so at the door. Our job is to make a good rug last another generation, not to sell repairs.

What the technician checks at pickup

A rug repair starts with a close look, and most of what we find is on the back. Before anything is rolled, the technician turns the rug over and checks the foundation for breaks, the ends for lost rows, the sides for worn selvedge, and the whole back for the grit and casings that mean moths. Then the front: pile height in the traffic lanes compared to the edges, dye bleed around old spills, stiffness that means an old glue repair, and whether the rug lies flat. All of it is written on the ticket with the price, so when the rug comes back you can see what was done against what was found.

You are welcome to ask for the inspection without committing to anything. Many customers want to know what a rug is worth repairing before deciding, and that conversation is free. If the honest answer is that a rug is not worth the work, you will hear it at the door.

  • Back of the rug: foundation breaks, moth grit, old repairs, pad residue
  • Ends: fringe length, lost rows, loose knots
  • Sides: selvedge wear, unraveling, previous binding
  • Front: pile wear, stains, dye stability, curling or rippling
  • Written price for the wash and each repair before the rug leaves

Rugs we repair

  • Hand-knotted Oriental and Persian rugs, wool on cotton or wool on wool (Persian rug cleaning)
  • Antique and inherited rugs, including pieces that have been in a family for decades (antique rug cleaning)
  • Tribal and village rugs with wool foundations, kilims and flatweaves
  • Wool rugs of every kind (wool rug cleaning)
  • Machine-made wool and synthetic rugs: binding, serging, fringe and padding only; reweaving is rarely worth it on a machine-made rug and we will say so
  • Runners and stair runners, including re-binding after they have been cut to length

Why repair instead of replace

A hand-knotted rug with a hole in it is still a hand-knotted rug. The wool, the dyes and the thousands of knots around the hole are intact; only the damaged area needs work. Replacing it with a new rug of the same quality costs many times more than the repair, and the new rug will not have the color and the feel that twenty years of foot traffic give wool. Our customers in Nassau and Suffolk repair rugs for the same reason they wash them at the plant instead of throwing them out: because the rug is worth it. The Oriental rug cleaning cost guide explains how washing and repair fit together on one ticket.

There is also the practical side. Fringe that keeps unraveling takes rows of the rug with it. A corner that curls is a trip hazard. A moth problem that is ignored spreads to every wool rug and sweater in the house. Fixing the rug early is always cheaper than fixing it late.
