What fringe actually is, and why it matters

On a hand-knotted rug, the fringe is not decoration sewn on at the end. It is the warp, the lengthwise threads that the whole rug is knotted onto, left long and tied off at each end. When fringe wears away, the knots at the end of the rug have nothing holding them and the rug starts losing rows. A rug that has lost a few inches of pile at one end lost it because the fringe went first.

On a machine-made rug the fringe usually is sewn on, and when it frays it is simply ugly rather than structural. Both kinds come through our plant, and the fix is different for each, which is why the technician looks at the back of the rug before quoting.

Vacuum beater bars, doorways, pets and years of foot traffic are what take fringe. Beach sand, which we see in rugs from Long Beach to the Hamptons, grinds it. Washing does not: fringe cleaned at a plant wash comes back white and combed, but a wash cannot put back what is already gone.

Hand-knotted fringe versus sewn-on fringe

The repair depends entirely on which kind of fringe you have, so it is worth knowing. Turn the end of the rug over. If the fringe threads run straight into the body of the rug and the knots of the pile sit directly on them, the fringe is the warp of a hand-knotted rug and it is structural. If there is a line of stitching along the end and the fringe is attached below it, the fringe was sewn on after weaving, which is normal for machine-made rugs and for some hand-tufted ones.

On the hand-knotted rug, lost fringe means the end of the rug is open and every vacuum pass pulls at the last row of knots. That is the repair that cannot wait. On the sewn-on rug, the fringe is a trim: it can be replaced, shortened, or removed and the end serged, which many customers prefer for a cleaner look in a modern room. Both are small jobs at the plant; the difference is in urgency, and the technician will tell you which you have.

The three fringe repairs we do

1

Securing the end

When fringe is short but the knots are still intact, we overcast or re-tie the warp ends so the end of the rug is locked and cannot lose another row. This is the smallest repair and the one we recommend most often, because it stops the damage before it reaches the pile.

2

Re-tying and rebuilding

When the fringe is uneven, with some tassels gone and some intact, we re-knot the remaining warp ends into clean, even tassels and rebuild the end finish. The result is the rug's own fringe, tidy again.

3

Replacing the fringe

When the fringe is gone or the end of the rug has worn into the pile, we secure the end and sew on new fringe, hand-sewn on hand-knotted rugs and machine-sewn on machine-made rugs, in a color and length that matches. Rows of lost pile can be rewoven first if the rug is worth it.

How the job goes

The rug is picked up free, washed at the plant first so the new fringe is matched against clean wool, then repaired at the bench. Fringe work adds a few days to the normal 7 to 10 day wash turnaround. The technician writes the price at pickup; you know the cost before the rug leaves your house. If a corner is curling or an edge is also worn, we quote blocking or edge binding at the same time so there is one pickup and one delivery.

A new fringe on an old rug can look too white. We can tone it to match the age of the rug if you prefer, and we always ask. When the rug comes back the fringe is combed straight, the end is square, and the rug lies flat. Many customers add a pad at delivery because a rug that slides is a rug whose fringe gets caught.

Keeping fringe alive between repairs

  • Vacuum toward the fringe, never over it, and turn the beater bar off near the ends
  • Shake or comb fringe straight by hand; never pull a tangled tassel
  • Do not bleach fringe at home: it weakens the cotton and yellows later
  • Rotate the rug once a year so one end does not take all the door traffic
  • Have the rug washed at the plant every few years; clean fringe lasts longer than fringe full of grit

Fringe on runners and stair rugs

Runners lose fringe faster than any other rug because both ends sit in doorways or at the top and bottom of stairs, where every step lands on them. Hall runners in the center-hall colonials of Garden City and Manhasset and the long upstairs hallways of Levittown capes come to us with one end bald and the other fine. The fix is the same: secure the end, re-tie or replace the fringe, and, for a runner that has to stay in a doorway, consider removing the fringe and serging the end so there is nothing to catch. For a stair runner we also check how it was fixed to the steps; a runner that creeps wears its fringe against the riser.
