Drapes collect everything in a room: dust, pet hair, smoke, cooking film and the pollen that comes through an open Long Island window. We clean them on the rod, in your home, without taking them down, with the same organic, non-toxic products we use on your sofa.
Drapes are the largest fabric surface in most rooms and the one that is cleaned least. They hang still, they are warm from the window, and air moves through them every time a door opens, so they filter the room: dust, pet dander, smoke, cooking grease from an open-plan kitchen, and in spring the yellow pollen that coats every car on Long Island. After a few years the top of a lined drape is gray, the hem is dusty, and the whole panel smells faintly of the house.
They do not get cleaned because taking them down is a job. Unhooking pleated panels, dry-cleaning them, waiting, re-hanging and re-pleating them is an afternoon, and some fabrics shrink or lose their shape at the dry cleaner. So the drapes stay up for a decade. Our on-site method removes that excuse: the drapes stay on the rod, we clean them where they hang, and they are dry in a few hours.
The technician checks the fabric, the lining, the header and any trim, and tests a hidden spot for colorfastness and shrinkage. Silk, some linens and some lined drapes are cleaned with a dry method instead of water; we tell you which before starting.
Dust, hair and pollen are removed first with a vacuum and upholstery tools, from the top of the header to the hem, front and back. This is most of the dirt in most drapes and it must come out dry.
Fabric-safe pre-spray, then low-moisture hot-water extraction with the upholstery tool, panel by panel, working with the fabric so pleats and hems keep their shape. Smoke and cooking film come out at this step.
Drapes are dried on the rod with air movement and are dry in two to four hours. Pleats are dressed and hems are straightened before we leave. No re-hanging, no waiting.
For anyone with dust or pollen allergies, drapes are the room's biggest reservoir. They hold dust mites, their droppings, pet dander and spring pollen in a fabric that is disturbed every time the window is opened or the heat comes on, and they hang at face height next to the bed. Vacuuming the surface takes off the loose layer and leaves the rest in the weave. The on-site cleaning removes it: dry vacuuming of both faces first, then extraction, which pulls out what the vacuum cannot reach, and the room is noticeably different the same evening.
The best time on Long Island is late spring, after the pollen, and again in the fall before the windows close for the winter. Pair the drapes with the mattress and the bedroom carpet on one visit and the bedroom is handled once a year in a single appointment.
Cotton, polyester, blends and most linens clean well on the rod. Silk, velvet, some acetates and anything with glued trim or water-sensitive dye are cleaned with a dry, solvent-free method or, rarely, not at all; the technician says which at the door. Drapes that are sun-rotted along the leading edge or at the hem will not survive any cleaning and we will tell you rather than tear them. Old drapes that have never been cleaned can release so much dust that the room needs a vacuum afterward; we do it. We use the same organic, non-toxic products described on our organic carpet cleaning page, so a nursery or a bedroom is safe to use the same evening.
Drapery is priced per panel by width and length, with lined panels, sheers and valances each at their own rate, and the price is written down before we start. Most customers add drapes to a sofa or carpet visit because the technician and the truck are already there, and that is the cheapest way to do it. Book the main service online, save $20, and add drapes in the notes, or tell the technician at the door. Dry time is two to four hours; for a house with the windows open it is closer to two. See our upholstery cleaning cost guide for Nassau County for how drapes fit with sofas and chairs on one ticket, and book online to save $20.
There is almost nothing to do. Clear the windowsill and the floor under the drapes so the technician can work the full length of each panel, move small furniture away from the window, and tell us about any fabric you are unsure of or any trim that has been glued rather than sewn. If the drapes have not been cleaned in years, expect the first dry vacuum pass to release a surprising amount of dust; we vacuum the sill and the floor afterwards. Pets and children can be in the house; the products are the same organic, non-toxic ones we use on sofas and mattresses, and the room is usable as soon as the fabric is dry.
