A clean rug stays clean longer with the right protection. After the wash we can apply a fiber protector so spills sit on top long enough to blot up, and a moth treatment so wool is not eaten in a dark corner. Both are done at our plant before your rug comes home.
Fiber protector is a clear treatment applied to the pile after a rug has been washed and dried. It does not change the look or the feel of the rug. What it changes is time: a glass of juice or a coffee drip sits on top of the fibers for longer before it soaks in, so you have a real chance to blot it up.
It also helps with everyday dirt. Dry soil does not grab protected fibers as easily, so more of it comes out with the vacuum and the traffic lane stays brighter for longer.
It is not magic and we will not sell it as magic. A protected rug is not stain-proof, and protector wears off with foot traffic and with each wash. That is why we apply it fresh after every professional cleaning, when the fibers are clean enough to take it evenly.

We recommend protector where it pays for itself and we tell you when a rug does not need it.
Clothes moths do not really want the wool. They want what is in the wool: skin oils, food crumbs, pet accidents and dust. They lay eggs where it is dark, warm and quiet, which on Long Island means under the sofa, under the bed, in the closet and in the basement. The larvae eat a bare path through the pile, and by the time you see it the damage is done.
Moth prevention starts with the wash. A clean rug is a poor meal, and the wash removes any eggs and larvae already in the pile. After the wash we can treat the rug with a moth repellent that does not change the color or the feel of the wool. Then the rest is how the rug lives at home, below.
If moths have already eaten bare spots, that is a repair job: see moth damage rug repair, where the rug is treated, washed and the pile is rebuilt by hand.

Protection is the last step of a plant wash, so it goes onto clean, dry fibers.
The rug is dusted, washed submerged, rinsed and dried flat. Protector on a dirty rug just seals the dirt in.
Silk, viscose and very old dyes are tested on a hidden spot first. If a rug should not be treated, we say so.
Fiber protector and, for wool, moth repellent are applied evenly over the whole pile, then groomed in.
The rug dries again before it is rolled, and you get simple care tips with it when we bring it home.
A felt and rubber pad stops slipping and wear and lets grit fall through instead of grinding the wool.
Once a month, reach the part of the rug under the sofa and the bed. That is where moths start.
Turning the rug end to end spreads the wear and the sun, and brings the hidden corner into the light.
Protector buys you time, so use it: blot with paper towels and a little cool water. Never rub, never use heat.
Never store a dirty rug. Have it washed, roll it, wrap it in breathable material, not plastic, and keep it off a damp basement floor.
Rugs in busy rooms and homes with pets need it more often. Each wash is the moment to renew the protection.

No. It gives you more time to clean up a spill, it does not make a rug stain-proof. Red wine, coffee and pet urine still need to be blotted quickly.
It wears down with foot traffic and with each wash, so we apply it fresh after every professional cleaning. In a busy room that is every one to two years.
A full wash removes the soil moths feed on and any eggs or larvae already in the pile. After the wash we can apply a moth repellent that does not change the color or feel of the wool. At home, vacuum under furniture, turn the rug and never store it dirty.
Sometimes. We test on a hidden corner first, and if the fiber or the dye does not take it well, we do not apply it and we tell you why.
