Some rugs should never be cleaned on your floor. We pick them up, wash them completely at our Long Island rug plant, dry them flat under controlled air, and bring them back. Free pickup and delivery, a written price before the rug leaves your house.
There are two honest ways to clean an area rug. The first is on site: our truck-mounted steam unit pre-sprays and extracts the rug where it lies, and it is dry the same day. That is the right call for most synthetic and machine-made rugs with normal soil, and it is the service on our area rug cleaning, Oriental rug cleaning, Persian rug cleaning, wool rug cleaning, silk rug cleaning and antique rug cleaning pages. The second way is a plant wash: the rug is rolled, picked up, and washed from front to back and all the way through the foundation at our facility. This page is about the second way.
A plant wash is the only method that gets everything out of a rug. Sand, grit and dust settle into the base of the pile and the foundation, below where any on-site machine can reach. Pet urine soaks through the backing. Wool holds dirt in the lanolin. A full immersion wash moves water through the whole rug, not just across the top of it, and that is why a rug that has been washed at a plant feels lighter, lies flatter, and smells like nothing at all.
If you are not sure which method your rug needs, you do not have to decide on the phone. The technician looks at the rug at the door and tells you. Most rugs on Long Island are fine on site; the ones that go to the plant are the hand-knotted pieces, the wool and silk rugs, the rugs with urine or water damage, and the beach-town rugs that are full of sand. Our guide on the best way to clean an area rug without ruining it walks through the decision in detail.
We schedule the pickup like any other appointment, usually same-day or next-day. The technician inspects the rug with you, notes pre-existing wear, measures it, and writes the price. Only then is it rolled, wrapped and tagged with your name. Nothing leaves the house without a written price.
At the plant the rug is turned face down and dusted mechanically before any water touches it. This is the step that no on-site method has. A rug that has been vacuumed every week for years will still give up cups of dry soil here. Washing a rug without dusting it first just turns that soil into mud inside the foundation.
The rug is tested for colorfastness, then washed on the wash floor with a wool-safe, pH-balanced solution, worked through the pile by hand and by machine, and rinsed until the water runs clear. Urine, odor and moth treatments happen at this stage when the rug needs them.
The rug is wrung, then dried flat or hung in a controlled-air drying room, never in the sun and never folded damp. Once dry, the pile is groomed, the fringe is combed and cleaned, and the rug is inspected again before it is rolled for delivery. Typical turnaround is 7 to 10 days; we call you when it is ready.
These are the rugs the technician will recommend for pickup almost every time. If yours is on this list, it is worth the wait.
Pickup and delivery are free everywhere in Nassau and Suffolk. Plant-wash pricing starts at $150 per rug and is based on the size and the fiber, measured at your door; a written price is given before the rug is rolled. If the rug also needs a repair, the technician quotes that separately on the same visit, so there is one pickup and one delivery. For a rug that only needs an on-site steam cleaning, that service starts at $99 for the first rug and $60 for the second, and we do it the same day. Every price on this site is a starting price; the exact figure is written down before any work begins. You save $20 on any service when you book online.
When the rug comes back, we unroll it, lay it in place and, if you ask, put a fresh pad under it. A clean rug on an old crumbling pad does not stay clean long, which is why so many customers add rug padding to the delivery.
A plant-washed rug feels different. It is lighter, because the dry soil is gone. The colors are brighter, because the gray film on the pile has been rinsed away rather than pushed down. It lies flat, because it was dried flat. The fringe is white again instead of gray. And it has no smell, including no cleaning-product smell, because the last step is a clear-water rinse.
If the rug had moth activity, loose fringe or a worn edge, you will have been told at pickup and offered the repair. Those jobs happen at the plant after the wash, so the rug comes back finished. See moth damage rug repair, fringe repair and rug blocking and stretching for what each one involves.

Yes. Pickup and delivery are free everywhere in Nassau and Suffolk County. You pay for the wash, from $150 per rug, and the price is written down at your door before the rug is rolled.
Typically 7 to 10 days from pickup to delivery. Dusting, washing, rinsing and controlled drying each take time, and a rug is never returned damp. If you need it faster for an event, tell us at booking and we will say honestly whether we can do it.
Yes. Size and fiber decide the price, and the technician measures the rug and checks the fiber at pickup. You get a written price before the rug leaves. If you prefer, you can send photos and the dimensions first and we will give you a range.
Often yes. Synthetic, machine-made and lightly soiled rugs are steam cleaned on site from $99 and are dry the same day. Hand-knotted, wool, silk, urine-damaged, water-damaged and sand-filled rugs do better with a plant wash. The technician tells you which at the door.
Every rug is tested for colorfastness before it is washed, and dyes that are not stable are set before the wash. Rugs that cannot take water are cleaned with a dry method instead. This is exactly why some rugs should not be steam cleaned on a wet floor at home.
Yes. Fringe is cleaned and combed as part of every plant wash. If the fringe is torn, unraveling or missing, we can repair or replace it at the plant; see our rug fringe repair page.
A plant wash is the only cleaning that fully removes urine from a rug, because the salts are in the foundation and the backing, not just the pile. Rugs with urine get a soak and flush before the wash. On-site cleaning can reduce the smell but cannot remove what is in the backing.
Same-day appointments across Nassau and Suffolk. Carpet from $25 per room (3-room minimum), $20 off any service when you book online, and a written price before we start.
