Why a rug pad matters more than people think

Every repair on our rug repair page is more likely on a rug without a pad. A rug that slides on a wood floor creases, and creases become worn lines. A rug on a hard floor with no cushion gets crushed where people walk; the pile breaks down against the floor instead of flexing on a pad. A rug that ripples catches shoes, and corners that lift get kicked and curl. A rug on top of wall-to-wall carpet walks across the room on its own.

A pad fixes all of that, and it does one more thing: it keeps the rug cleaner. Grit falls through the pile and sits on the pad instead of grinding between the rug and the floor, and the pad lets the vacuum pull air through the rug so more of that grit comes out. We see the difference at the plant every week. Rugs that lived on a good pad come in with far less dry soil in the foundation.

The pad also protects the floor. Some rubber pads and most cheap PVC pads stick to or discolor polyurethane finishes over time. We only use pads that are safe on finished hardwood.

The three pads we use, and which floor each is for

1

Felt and natural rubber

For hardwood and tile under most rugs. Dense felt on top gives cushion and lets the rug breathe; natural rubber underneath grips the floor without sticking to it. This is the pad we recommend for hand-knotted and wool rugs on wood floors.

2

Natural rubber

For thin rugs, runners and kitchen rugs on hard floors where you want grip but no added height, for example at a doorway that has to clear a door. Open-weave rubber, not the PVC mesh sold in hardware stores.

3

Rug-on-carpet pad

For rugs on top of wall-to-wall carpet. A firm, textured pad that locks into the carpet pile and stops the rug from creeping, without adding sponginess.

What a bad pad does to a rug and a floor

We see the results of bad pads every week at the plant. A cheap PVC mesh pad under a hand-knotted rug on a wood floor hardens in a few years and starts to crumble; the crumbs stick to the back of the rug and to the floor finish, and the pattern of the mesh is pressed permanently into the polyurethane. A thick foam pad under a thin rug lets the rug slide on top of the pad, so the rug ripples while the pad stays put. A rubber pad that is too small lets the edges of the rug drop off the pad and wear against the floor. And no pad at all on a hard floor means the pile is crushed flat in the traffic lane within a couple of seasons.

The right pad is boring: felt and natural rubber, cut an inch smaller than the rug, replaced when it gets thin. It does not stick, it does not crumble, it lets the rug breathe, and it costs a fraction of any repair it prevents.

How it works

Padding is easiest when the rug is already with us. If your rug is coming in for a plant wash or a repair, tell us you want a pad and we measure the rug at the plant, cut the pad about an inch smaller all round so the edges of the rug lie flat, and deliver and lay the pad with the rug. If the rug is not coming in, the technician can measure it on an on-site cleaning visit and bring the pad on the next trip.

Pads are priced by the square foot and the type, with a written price before we cut. A pad under an old crumbling one is replaced, not layered: old foam pads that have turned to powder are a cleaning problem on their own, and we take the old pad away.

For area rug cleaning on site we always check what is under the rug. A rug cleaned on a disintegrating pad is clean for a week.

Pads we do not use

  • PVC or vinyl mesh pads: they harden, crumble, and can bond to polyurethane floor finishes
  • Thick foam pads under thin rugs: the rug ripples because it moves and the pad does not
  • Adhesive tapes and sticky strips on hardwood: they leave residue and pull finish
  • Any pad cut larger than the rug: edges that stick out get caught, and the rug edge wears over the pad edge

Pads for runners, stairs and doorways

Runners and small rugs move most, so they need the pad most. A hall runner on a natural rubber pad stays where it is put and stops the ripples that make people trip. A stair runner needs a pad under every tread, cut so it does not show past the edge of the runner, and the runner itself must be fixed to each step; we do both. Doorway and kitchen rugs get the thin rubber pad so the door clears. Bath mats and rugs on tile get the same rubber pad, because tile is the floor rugs slide on most. Every pad is cut to the rug, not bought in a standard size and folded under.
